• MIP Educational Class Only: $200

• Court-Ordered Chemical Dependency Assessment: $400

• If a class is recommended by the assessment: $50

 

If the court orders a chemical dependency assessment, the total cost is $400.  An additional charge applies if the assessment recommends the class.

 

If you are only required to complete the MIP educational class and no assessment has been ordered, the class costs $200.

Why Do I Have to Pay Out of Pocket?

​

Many people ask why their health insurance does not cover the MIP Educational Class or a court-ordered chemical dependency assessment.

The answer is simple: these services are legal requirements—not medical benefits.

​

When a court orders an MIP Educational Class or a chemical dependency assessment following a Minor in Possession (MIP) offense, those services are performed to satisfy a legal requirement of the court. They are not provided solely to diagnose or treat a medical condition. For that reason, health insurance generally does not cover court-ordered educational programs or court-ordered assessments, just as it does not cover most probation requirements, legal classes, or other services performed solely to satisfy legal obligations.

Because insurance benefits do not cover these services, payment is due when you make your appointment.

​

If a chemical dependency assessment identifies a substance use disorder or another behavioral health condition that requires treatment, treatment services may be eligible for insurance coverage if they meet your insurance carrier's medical necessity requirements and all other coverage criteria.

​

Important: Court-ordered educational classes and court-ordered chemical dependency assessments should not be billed to health insurance solely because they are required as part of a criminal or juvenile offense. Billing an insurer for a service that is not a covered benefit or misrepresenting the purpose of the service may violate insurance billing rules and applicable state and federal laws.

Our goal is to ensure that every participant receives the education and assessment required by the court while maintaining full compliance with Montana law, ethical billing standards, and accepted clinical practices.

What is the MIP Program?

​

The Minor in Possession (MIP) Program offered through Oxytocin is designed for individuals under the age of 21 who have received a first or subsequent Minor in Possession (MIP) citation.

​

The program provides education about the physical and psychological effects of alcohol and other drugs, the legal consequences of underage substance use, and the importance of responsible decision-making. The goal is to help participants better understand the risks associated with alcohol and drug use while reducing the likelihood of future offenses.

MIP CLASS

​

The class consists of a single six-hour session held on a Saturday.

​

Classes are typically offered every other month, with additional monthly classes scheduled when enrollment allows.

If the participant is under 18, a parent or legal guardian must attend the class with the participant unless the facility has given prior approval. 

​

Participants must attend the entire six-hour session to receive credit for completion. Upon successful completion, Oxytocin will forward the required documentation to the referring court or agency.

​

Important Deadlines

​

Montana law establishes specific deadlines for completing MIP requirements.

Participants must:

• Contact an approved MIP provider and schedule the required appointment within two (2) weeks or ten (10) business days of being sentenced by the court.

• Successfully complete all court-ordered requirements within ninety (90) days of the sentencing date unless otherwise ordered by the court.

 

Missing these deadlines may result in additional legal consequences or a finding of non-compliance with the court's order.
