TELEHEATH

Telehealth Services

At Oxytocin, we recognize that telehealth can improve access to behavioral health services for many individuals. Telehealth allows eligible clients to receive certain services through secure audio and video technology when travel, illness, weather, distance, or other circumstances make in-person appointments difficult.

However, telehealth is a method of delivering care, not a separate level of treatment. Our primary goal is to provide the most clinically effective services possible. For that reason, telehealth is used only when clinically indicated and when the treating clinician determines it is appropriate, safe, and effective for the client's individual needs.

Our Clinical Philosophy

At Oxytocin, we believe that in-person treatment remains the preferred standard of care for substance use disorder treatment services.

Recovery from substance use disorders is strengthened through direct therapeutic relationships, face-to-face interaction, peer support, structured programming, accountability, observation of nonverbal communication, and opportunities for immediate clinical intervention. These important therapeutic elements are often more effectively delivered in person than through a virtual platform.

While telehealth has an important role in increasing access to care, it is not intended to replace in-person treatment when face-to-face services would provide greater clinical benefit.

When Telehealth Is Appropriate

Telehealth services are offered only when clinically indicated and when the treating clinician determines that services can be delivered safely and effectively through a secure telehealth platform.

Each client's circumstances are individually evaluated before telehealth services are provided.

Clinical considerations may include:

  • The client's diagnosis and presenting concerns

  • Current mental health and substance use symptoms

  • Safety and risk factors

  • Ability to actively participate in treatment

  • Access to reliable technology

  • Ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality

  • Whether treatment goals can be effectively addressed through telehealth

  • Applicable Montana and federal laws

  • Insurance or program requirements

The decision to provide telehealth services is based upon professional clinical judgment and each client's individualized treatment plan.

Telehealth Services Available

When clinically appropriate, telehealth may be available for:

  • Chemical Dependency Assessments

  • Mental Health Assessments

  • Individual Counseling

  • Level 1 Outpatient Services

  • Care Management

  • Recovery Support Services

  • Peer Support Services

  • Family Sessions

  • Continuing Care

  • Treatment Planning

Availability of telehealth services may vary based upon clinical appropriateness, licensing requirements, payer requirements, and applicable laws.

When In-Person Services Are Required

Telehealth may not be appropriate when:

  • A higher level of clinical observation or intervention is necessary.

  • Active substance use, withdrawal symptoms, or intoxication interfere with treatment participation.

  • Safety concerns require face-to-face assessment.

  • Clinical progress indicates that in-person treatment would be more effective.

  • Confidentiality or privacy cannot be adequately maintained.

  • Drug or alcohol testing requiring direct observation is necessary.

  • Court orders, probation requirements, payer requirements, or program standards require in-person participation.

  • The clinician determines that telehealth is no longer clinically appropriate.

For individuals participating in Level 2.1 Intensive Outpatient Services, in-person attendance is strongly encouraged whenever possible due to the therapeutic value of structured group treatment, peer interaction, accountability, and direct clinical observation.

Oxytocin reserves the right to require in-person appointments when clinically necessary.

Technology & Privacy

Telehealth services are provided using secure, HIPAA-compliant technology whenever possible.

Clients participating in telehealth are expected to:

  • Participate from a private location.

  • Use a reliable internet connection.

  • Minimize distractions.

  • Ensure they can communicate openly and safely with their clinician.

Although every reasonable safeguard is utilized, electronic communications involve inherent privacy risks that cannot be completely eliminated.

Safety During Telehealth

At the beginning of each telehealth appointment, your clinician may verify:

  • Your current physical location

  • A telephone number where you can be reached

  • An emergency contact

  • Whether anyone else is present during the session

This information helps ensure your safety should an emergency occur during the appointment.

Because Oxytocin does not provide emergency or crisis services, telehealth is not appropriate for:

  • Medical emergencies

  • Psychiatric emergencies

  • Active suicidal or homicidal crises

  • Severe intoxication

  • Acute withdrawal requiring medical management

  • Any condition requiring immediate in-person intervention

If you are experiencing an emergency, call 911, call or text 988, or go immediately to the nearest emergency department.

Privacy & Confidentiality

Telehealth services are provided in accordance with:

  • HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act)

  • 42 CFR Part 2 for Substance Use Disorder treatment records

  • Applicable Montana statutes and administrative rules

  • Professional licensing requirements

The same privacy and confidentiality protections that apply to in-person treatment also apply to telehealth services.

Insurance & Payment

Insurance coverage for telehealth depends on your individual insurance benefits, medical-necessity requirements, prior-authorization requirements, and applicable law.

Verification of insurance benefits does not guarantee payment.

Clients remain financially responsible for:

  • Copayments

  • Coinsurance

  • Deductibles

  • Non-covered services

Court-ordered evaluations, educational programs, and other services performed solely to satisfy legal obligations are not covered by health insurance.

Our Commitment

Our commitment is to provide the right service, at the right time, in the right setting. While telehealth can improve access to care for many individuals, we believe that treatment should always be delivered in the setting that provides the greatest opportunity for success.

Whenever clinically appropriate, particularly for individuals receiving substance use disorder treatment, Oxytocin encourages participation in in-person services, where clients benefit from greater therapeutic engagement, structured programming, peer interaction, accountability, and direct clinical support.

Telehealth will continue to be offered when it enhances access to care without compromising clinical quality, safety, or treatment effectiveness.
